That translation is not incorrect. "fair" in this case certainly doesn't refer to his disposition 
The epithet probably indicates he was either blond, or silver-haired (like his grandfather). There was blond hair in Beren's family tree, so that is where it would have come from. I study this stuff way too hard mk?
